Solar Powered Stadium Complete and Ready To Power Itself In Time For World Games

A stadium in Kaohsiung, Taiwan is the first in the world to completely power itself 100% via solar power. The stadium was built to coincide with the 2009 World Games, which will be held at the stadium in July. When not hosting the World Games the stadium will be used (like most other stadiums) for sporting events and athletics.

The stadium, designed by Japanese architect Toyo Ito, is spread over 19 hectares (about 47 acres if I calculated correctly) and it can seat 50,000 spectators. It is built on a steel-rod structure and contains 8,844 solar panels (a 14,155 sq meter solar roof).

It costs $150 million to build the stadium, but since the power drawn in from the sun into the stadiums panels is more than enough to power the stadium's 3,300 lights as well as the two giant televisions screens I imagine there will not be any worry about high electric bills. In fact the panels can generate 1.14 million kWh of electricity per year. This will prevent 660 tons of carbon dioxide from being discharged into the atmosphere. In addition, when the stadium is not in use, the Taiwanese government will sell the surplus power. This power can power the surrounding neighborhood with up to 80 per cent of its energy needs.Solar panels are not the only way this stadium is planet-friendly either. Permeable pavement is used throughout the stadium and the materials used to make the stadium are reusable as well as locally made (in Taiwan). In addition there is also a lot of parkland with trails and trees around the stadium.

The stadium is also people friendly. Unlike many stadiums where finding shade can become a competitive sport, this stadium provides shade for spectators through its fanlike structure. This allows people to be in the shade most of the day (protection against skin cancer) making games all the more enjoyable to watch.

Patterned toilet paper is nothing new, there have been comic toilet tissue rolls, Sudoku puzzle patterns, even Hello Kitty tissue rolls but this may be the first time an entire novel has been given the TP treatment. We can thank Koji Suzuki for agreeing to subject his work to a fate worse than the most savage review and Shizuoka-based Hayashi Paper for convincing Suzuki to go along with their crappy idea.

Suzuki's no hack writer by the way - his previous credits include horror novels Ring and Spiral, both later made into popular Japanese horror films. His latest endeavor, Drop, is a nine-chapter horror story that happens to be set in a public bathroom.

According to Hayashi Paper, reading Suzuki's novel in a similar setting will invest what should be a relaxing experience with "psychological fright". Say Hayashi, isn't that what laxatives are for?
It may seem a contradiction in terms for a novel written on toilet paper to scare readers sh*tless, unless Suzuki subconsciously feels his work is worthy of preservation rather than desecration. On the other hand, if reading horror novels scares the crap out of you, you'll be ideally prepared.

"Magical" Russian Steel Could Re-define Global Construction Standards

I'll be the first to tell you that I'm not very handy with tools. My friends, family, girlfriend, and ex-wife will confirm this with embarrassing clarity. Building things is not my forum-though I'm really good at destroying things.

So bear with me while I figure this out.

It seems that a Russian company has developed a new type of construction material that is 50% cheaper than steel, weighs significantly less, and won't corrode.It is called a Glass Fiber Reinforced Composite Polymeric Armature. Essentially, this material operates sort of like a cross between concrete and steel. It can be used for multiple purposes, ranging from dry dock moorings to road construction. A spiraled core inside the armature provides certain amount of flexibility that enables it to be used for connection to load bearing areas to brick surface areas.

I suspect that the steel industry should keep it's eyes on this stuff, as it may be the wave of future construction...

As a result of bad sectors you may have difficulties to read and copy data from your disk, your operating system becomes unstable and finally your computer may unable to boot altogether. When a hard drive is damaged with bad sectors, the disk not only becomes unfit for use, but also you risk losing information stored on it. The main purpose of the unregistered demo version is to display a report which contains information about the possibility to regenerate the entire disk by means of the registered full version. If the first found bad sector has been successfully regenerated, you can buy the product to regenerate all bad sectors on your hard drive. If the first bad sector has NOT been successfully regenerated, then replace your hard disk drive as soon as possible.

Important notes

Since the program does not change the logical structure of a hard drive, the file system may still show some sectors marked earlier as 'bad', and other disk utilities such as Scandisk will detect logical bad sectors even though the disk has been successfully regenerated and is no longer damaged by physical bad sectors. If you want to remove these marks, repartition the hard disk drive.

Computers are great tools. However, a computer cannot, on its own, control the way in which it is used. However, this may be necessary to prevent problems, as when employees download pirated software from the web, or when students use a school computer for unintended purposes, or trade show attendees change the settings on a public computer. Our software is designed for small and medium-size companies, schools, public agencies, and, of course, also for individuals who are interested in protecting their computer. User Control can prevent specified applications from starting and block access to blacklisted websites. It can also prevent access to operating system components. This keeps users from altering system stettings and changing the appearance of the desktop.

User management: Determine at a glance what limits have been set for any user or user group. It’s easy: just click the last column to see which users belong to a given group.

Improved software filter: For any application, establish whether it is always available, never available, or restricted by time. User Control shows both the application name and the name of the executable file. An application can be made available only at specified times.

Controlling window titles: You can set restrictions not only for individual applications, but also for specified window titles. Window titles can be blocked system-wide or for individual applications.
Desktop Protection: To prevent changes to a desktop once it has been set up, you can lock in its appearance. This means that you can stop individual icons from being moved, deleted, or renamed. You can also prevent hiding of the start menu or the taskbar.

• Multiprocessing
The Gears team were considering a multithreaded browser (noting that a problem with existing web browser implementations was that they are inherently single-threaded) and Chrome implemented this concept with a multiprocessing architecture. A separate process is allocated to each task (eg tabs, plugins), as is the case with modern operating systems. This prevents tasks from interfering with each other which is good for both security and stability; an attacker successfully gaining access to one application does not give them access to all and failure in one application results in a "Sad Tab" screen of death. This strategy exacts a fixed per-process cost up front but results in less memory bloat overall as fragmentation is confined to each process and no longer results in further memory allocations. To complement this, Chrome will also feature a process manager which will allow the user to see how much memory and CPU each tab is using, as well as kill unresponsive tabs.

User interface
• Features
Chrome has added some commonly used plugin-specific features of other browsers into the default package, such as an Incognito tab mode, where no logs of the user activity are stored, and all cookies from the session are discarded. As a part of Chrome's V8 JavaScript virtual machine, pop-up JavaScript windows will not be shown by default, and will instead appear as a small bar at the bottom of the interface until the user wishes to display or hide the window. Chrome will include support for web applications running alongside other local applications on the computer. Tabs can be put in a web-app mode, where the omnibar and controls will be hidden with the goal of allowing the user to use the web-app without the browser "in the way".
• Rendering Engine
Chrome uses the WebKit rendering engine on advice from the Gears team because it is simple, memory efficient, useful on embedded devices and easy to learn for new developers.
• Tabs
While all of the major tabbed web browsers (e.g. Internet Explorer, Firefox) have been designed with the window as the primary container, Chrome will put tabs first (similar to Opera). The most immediate way this will show is in the user interface: tabs will be at the top of the window, instead of below the controls, as in the other major tabbed browsers. In Chrome, each tab will be an individual process, and each will have its own browser controls and address bar (dubbed omnibox), a design that adds stability to the browser. If one tab fails only one process dies; the browser can still be used as normal with the exception of the dead tab. Chrome will also implement a New Tab Page which shows the nine most visited pages in thumbnails, along with the most searched on sites, most recently bookmarked sites, and most recently closed tabs, upon opening a new tab, similar to Opera's "Speed Dial" page.

A Smaller Footprint Windows!
The latest developments in XPLite now see clean installations of Windows XP in under 350MB and Windows 2000 approaching less than 200 MB (excluding paging file) with much smaller memory requirements! These sizes are obtained simply by running XPLite/2000Lite on a fresh install of windows. Enterprising developers should easily be able to strip out additional log files, INF files and unused drivers to reduce the footprint by another 50MB or so. If your goal is to run a dedicated task in as little storage as possible - then look no further than XPlite.

If your needs are for a smaller OS, then ask yourself if you really need Windows XP or Windows 2000. We can fit a Windows 9x OS into a 16MB flash chip and most solutions fit readily onto a 32MB chip. Check out Embedded Windows 9x.
